The historic town of Hasami in Nagasaki Prefecture is one of the foremost pottery districts in Japan where they began crafting porcelain ware almost 400 years ago. Hasami craftsmen were able to develop a highly efficient system to mass produce their porcelain products thereby making them more consistent in quality and reasonable in price. Hasami Porcelain was designed by Takuhiro Shinomoto of Tortoise in Venice, CA whose vision was to integrate modern tableware design with the organic quality produced by traditional Japanese manufacturing techniques.
The charm of Hasami Porcelain lies in the soft and comfortable texture that is carefully shaped with modern lines and pleasant aesthetics. There is a distinct natural feel to its wares compared to that of traditional porcelain. The matte finish of the porcelain adds the organic touch that serves as a complement to food and beverages. Using traditional glazing techniques with a proprietary blend of natural stone and clay materials, the outer texture of Hasami Porcelain is a result of many years of development to bring out the very best of these raw natural resources.
Hasami Porcelain sets itself apart from the mass-produced, factory-made porcelain tableware found in other porcelain-producing regions around the world. Specialisation serves as a key factor in the overall production process. Each product is passed onto different craftsmen in various parts of the village to undergo a specific step of handwork until the product is completed. Each craftsman is skilled in their own specialised role, such as the mixing of soil and stone, the moulding of the product, the glazing, and the maintenance of the kiln during the firing process. They each contribute in their own way to create a piece that is naturally different from all the rest. This organisation of labour in the Hasami village has been passed down for generations.
Natural variances in colour and texture are what ultimately create the personality that defines each Hasami Porcelain piece as its own aesthetically unique product.

Sally Smith of Deep Earth Ceramics creates her stunning pieces with very earthy and tactile Australian stoneware, right here in Fremantle. Her work is all hand thrown, fired twice; bisque and glazed and comes from a place of emotional authenticity, bringing life to her work. Sally doesn’t aim for conventional perfection, instead allowing the natural form and beauty to shine through. Each piece is completely unique due to the handmade nature of Sally’s work, combined with the magic that happens during the firing process. The pieces shift and change, at times the forms become irregular taking on a new organic quality of their own.
Sally studied Art & Design for 3 years, majoring in Studio Ceramics for 3 years. She attributes her growth and knowledge to this period of many hours of hard work and exploration. She now works from her garden studio in Fremantle, with her constant companions always by her side; her two Dachshunds Pixie and Dylan.

Mclauchlan made is a small studio in Vancouver, Canada owned by British Expat, Elise Mclauchlan who creates stunning functional pieces using the traditional craft of wood turning.
Elise Mclauchlan began her design career as a window display designer for UK brand Mulberry. After 5 years of travelling the world and making and installing props she grew fascinated with building techniques and methods and decided to follow her passion of furniture.
Elise went back to University to study furniture design and making in London where she found herself drawn to wood turning on the lathe. She now makes stunning wood pieces in her abstract and geometric style that are occasionally sculptural but mainly functional.
